Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved cousin, The Duke of Kent, celebrates birthday

The Royal Family is wishing a Happy Birthday to The Duke of Kent today as he is celebrating his 89th birthday.

And as well as congratulations from King Charles and Queen Camilla, The Duke was serenaded by his old regiment. The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards arrived on his front doorstep at Kensington Palace to play ”Happy Birthday”.

The Duke was joined by his wife, the Duchess of Kent, for the celebration. Their younger son, Lord Nicholas Windsor, and the Duke’s younger brother, Prince Michael of Kent, were also there.

Prince Edward was born to Prince George, Duke of Kent, and Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, on 9 October 1935 at 3 Belgrave Square. As the grandson of King George V and Queen Mary, his birth was witnessed by the Home Secretary.

The Prince’s father died in a plane crash in Caithness in August 1942. He inherited his father’s titles at the age of six.

The young Duke of Kent attended Ludgrove School, Eton College, and Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland.

The Duke then chose to attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst where he won a foreign languages award. He graduated in 1955 and began serving as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Scots Greys. His Royal Highness would serve in the military for twenty years.

He married Katharine Worsley at York Minster on 8 June 1961. The couple have three children together: George, Earl of St. Andrews (1962), Lady Helen Taylor (1964), and Lord Nicholas Windsor (1970).

The Duke of Kent has served the Crown for five decades, and since the 1960s has carried out tours and engagements on behalf of the sovereign.

In 2022, he appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with his cousin, Queen Elizabeth II, for her Platinum Jubilee.
