The mysterious tiara that’s become a go to for queens and princesses

The Royal Family often earmarks a tiara for one member to wear throughout their life. However, there are a few tiaras that have been worn by multiple members. The mysterious Five Aquamarine Tiara is one of those shared pieces.

The Five Aquamarine Tiara, also referred to as the Aquamarine Ribbon Tiara, features a high frame with five large oval aquamarines each surrounded by diamond ribbons.

It is unknown which jeweller created the tiara or when it was made. Some royal watchers believe that the aquamarines were included in those that Brazilian government gave to Queen Elizabeth II but this has not been confirmed.

The tiara first appeared in 1970 when Queen Elizabeth II wore it for the only time during a Canadian tour when she attended a banquet in Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, and Her Majesty wore the possibly new tiara with an aquamarine and diamond necklace.

The Duchess of Edinburgh first wore the aquamarine tiara in 2012 when she and Prince Edward attended the wedding of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg’s and Countess Stephanie de Lannoy. Sophie chose it again in 2013 when Princess Madeleine of Sweden married Christopher O’Neill. Sophie has worn it at multiple state banquets since.

In November 2024, Queen Camilla made her debut in the Five Aquamarine Tiara when she wore it to the Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace. She paired it with an aquamarine and diamond necklace from her personal collection.
